A possible reason for this can be that accidentally the timer of the recorder is programmed with data in the "Timed start" and "Timed stop" settings. If you have set the "Timed start" and "Timed stop" and did not clear them (the VP4control software asks you if you want to use the timer function or not) they possibly can interfere with a manual start of the recorder.
Check you timer settings using VP4control and clear them before using the recorder manually.
